Geometry (Class 66)
Announcements
Quiz Friday, April 20 focusing on Chapter 10 Lessons 1-5
Overview
In today’s class we examine the relationships of lengths of segments of chords both inside and outside of circles. As time permits we also begin our study of the measures of angles formed by lines intersecting inside and outside of circles.
Textbook Sections
§10.5 (Txt. p.629) Segment Lengths in Circle
§10.4 Other Angle Relationships in Circles
Key Attitudes
Mathematics is about looking for patterns.
Key Ideas
Similar triangles can help us find relationships between the lengths of chords inside and outside of circles.
Key Skills
Proving triangles similar,
Writing and using proportions.
Finding the lengths of segments of internal chords of circles.
Finding the lengths of segments of external chords of circles.
Handouts
Chpater 10-Lesson 3: Intersecting Chrods of a Circle
Chapter 10.4-Lesson 4: Extended Chords of a Circle
Chapter 10-Lesson 5: Inside or Outside
Assignment
§10.5 (Txt. p.632) #10, 11, 13, 14, 16, 17, 19, 20, 25, 26, 40, 46
Chapter 10 Lessons 2, 3, and 4 are due next class. Please staple the book problems above to these lessons. All my be turned in together.

Geometry (Class 65)
Overview
Today we continue our investigations into geometric relationships related to circles. In particular we investigate lines tangent to a circle. As time permits we begin to investigate relationships related to intersecting chords of circles.
Textbook Sections
§10.1 (Txt. p.595) Tangents to Circles
§10.5 (Txt. p.629) Segment Lengths in Circle
Key Attitudes
Mathematics is about looking for patterns.
Key Ideas
If a line is tangent to a circle, then it is perpendicular to the radius drawn to the point of tangency.
In a plane, if a line is perpendicular to a radius of a circle at its endpoint on the circle, then the line is tangent to the circle.
If two segments from an exterior point are tangent to a circle, then the segments are congruent.
If two tangents to a circle are drawn from an external point, then their angle angle bisector passes through the center of the circle.
Key Skills
Constructing a tangent line to a circle.
Constructing a circle tangent to a line.
Vocabulary
chord
tangent line
tangent
point of tangency
radius
perpendicular
