Geometry—Writing Equations of Lines

A number of students are having a lot of trouble writing the equations of lines. This is a key skill. If you are one of these students, you can try this site to help (http://enlvm.usu.edu/ma/nav/toc.jsp?sid=__shared&cid=emready@eqns_lines&bb=published), come in and get help from me, or get help from someone else…

Geometry (Class 24)

Overview
I will not be in class today. Mr. Haddow will be my replacement teacher. During the class you will work on a warm-up problem involving parallel lines and “bent” transversals. You will then have time to discuss “Algebra & Geometry 3” and “Proving More Lines Parallel”. Test 4 will then be given and you will have the time after the test to start your HW.
Textbook Sections
§3.6 (Txt. p.165) Parallel Lines in the Coordinate Plane
§3.7 (Txt. p.172) Perpendicular Lines in the Coordinate Plane

Key Attitudes
Math is about reasoning and justifying.

Key Ideas
Equations and coordinates can be used to prove facts about shapes graphed on the coordinate plane.

Key Skills
Proving lines are parallel.
Finding the equation of a line given two points.
Determining if two lines are parallel or perpendicular based on the equations of the lines.
Finding the distance between two points.

Turn-In (#23)
More Practice Proofs #3
Chapter 3- Lesson 1: Your problem,

Handouts
Algebra & Geometry 4
Chapter 4- Lesson 1: The Triangle Inequality

Assignment
Algebra & Geometry 4

Algebra (Class 23)

Overview
In today’s class we work with applying the concepts we have learned related to lines and linear equations to different situations. In addition we begin a new unit focusing on ratio and proportion.
Textbook Sections
§8-5 (Txt. p.371) Determining an Equation of a Line

Vocabulary
unit price
unit rate
percent
proportion
rate

Key Attitudes
Math is about investigating and confirming

Key Ideas
In order to write an equation of a line you need two pieces of information-- the “change per month” (m) and the “amount started with” (b).
An equation of a line can always be written in the form y=mx+b.

Key Skills
Finding the equation of a line when given two points.
Finding the equation of a line when given one point and the slope of the line.
Sketching a graph of a line given its equation in y=mx+b form.
Determining if a point is on a line when given the coordinates of the point and the equation of the line.

Turn-In (#22)
